Prestigious National

April 7, 2004 - The
National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently announced the
winners of its 2004 Pillars of the Industry Awards. The Pillars Awards,
considered the most prestigious national awards in the industry, honor
excellence in multifamily and are looked to by both the industry and the
media as a showcase of innovation and future trends.
"The quality
represented by this year’s Pillars Awards winners cannot be overstated,"
said J. Ronald Terwilliger, CEO of Trammell Crow Residential and
Chairman of NAHB’s Multifamily Leadership Board. "The days of the
‘boring box’ apartment building are over-they are history. Today’s
apartment and condo communities are extraordinarily beautiful and
innovative and these award winners, in particular, are setting a new
standard for apartment living."

Modular Steel Bridge Speeds Reopening of I-95 Southbound Lanes in
Connecticut
Source:
AISC.org
A modular steel bridge assembled and erected in three
days will get traffic moving again on a critical section of congested
Interstate 95 here. Thursday evening, March 25, a fuel truck crashed,
spilling home heating oil onto a southbound overpass. The oil soon
exploded and burned, causing the collapse of the bridge.
Conn Abnee, Executive Director of the National Steel Bridge
Alliance in Chicago, praised the fast action of NSBA member Acrow
Corporation (Carlstadt, NJ), which makes the modular steel bridges.
“This is a great example of the versatility of steel for stepping into
emergency bridge situations of all kinds,” said Abnee.
On Friday morning, the day following the accident, Mark Joosten,
vice president of Acrow, visited the crash site and talked with
Connecticut officials about the company’s modular steel bridges. Within
a few hours he had an order for an 80-foot long three-lane vehicular
bridge. For more on this, including a time-line for the project, read

This is the tallest precast structure to have been built in a region of
highest seismic risk. The structure, built by Pankow Builders, Ltd.,
utilizes the Precast Hybrid Moment Resisting Fframe system developed
during the PRESSS testing, shares something in common with the Ocean
Villas project above, both used the BauGrid Welded Reinforcement Grid
system to accelerate construction and reduce rebar congestion.
According to the BauTech website, a
case study
is now available on the PCA website, or for more in-depth, technical
discussion about the project, you can read the

ASTM International and Sustainable Development
Source: ASTM.org
Keeping Pace with a New Global Market
by Dru Meadows
ASTM International’s five-year-old Subcommittee E06.71 on
Sustainability, part of
Committee E06 on
Performance of Buildings, is responding to a fast-growing market demand
for “green building” and “sustainable development.” This market interest
is voiced by building industry professionals, manufacturers, government
agencies, and customers. It is expressed in developed as well as
developing countries. The unique standards development forum offered by
ASTM International allows these often very different perspectives to
come together to develop standards that address the issues of
sustainability.
“Sustainability,” as defined in ASTM
E 2114, Terminology for
Sustainability Relative to the Performance of Buildings, is “the
maintenance of ecosystem components and functions for future
generations.” And “sustainable development,” as defined by that same
standard, is “development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Sustainability has three primary considerations: environmental, economic
and social. Each of these considerations must be addressed in the
development of standards. For facts and figures on market demand and
ASTM International's response,
